Do you love black nail polish?
Black with shy or unexpected glitter, shimmer, flecks, holo, duochrome... And what about just a "plain" black creme? Not the embarrassing "teenage goth phase with constantely chipped nail polish" type of black of course. The super glossy, perfectly painted on flawlessly shaped nails one (general image here, I'm not shamelessly talking about my nails, lol).
Well... I do love black polish, so today I have for you the new Yves Saint Laurent Duo Terriblement Noir Manicure Couture n°6 set for review and I am definitely excited about it.
The Duo Terriblement Noir consists of 2 black nail polishes, one shiny and one matte, created to reproduce the Tuxedo contrasts of powder texture and satin lapels. Let's see if they keep that promise.
Shiny Black is as black as black could possibly be. The first thing that surprised me after opening the bottle of polish was the angled brush. I can understand that the duo is meant to be used for contrasting french manis but that brush really got me worried... After the first stroke I didn't find it that bad, it worked pretty well actually : no uneven coverage or floaded cuticles. Formula was pretty good too, an easy 2 coater, neither thick nor thin and extremely glossy.
Matte Black is, in my humble opinion, a stunner! I must confess that I have never bought a matte black, apart from shimmery ones like Manglaze Matte is Murder. I meant a pure matte black, the one you could simply achieve by using a matte topcoat over a creme, it just seemed like a waste of money. Well this one proved my wrong. I couldn't say just how much I love it. I just used a rather thick coat over my ridge filing basecoat (Nail Tek Foundation II) and it blew me away with its texture... The only downside I could find is drying time, it did take a couple more minutes than Shinny Black but it was so worth the wait.
And just for fun, because I couldn't resist reproducing the lovely look from the Yves Saint Laurent promo pic, here's my quickly free handed version of the matte/glossy french :
Overall : Duo Terriblement Noir is a really nice set for the black lovers with an incredibly sexy and fierce matte that I will definitely be wearing more than once.
And this, dear readers, was my 200th post. Another milestone ♥
The Duo Terriblement Noir Manicure Couture n°6 set is already available online on YSLbeauty.com and in selected boutiques and retails for 30€ / $30 / £24.

SO happy you reviewed this. I've been waiting to purchase it, but wanted to wait until a review came out. Loving the matte. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteyou're welcome Sally. I'm glad I could help ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh wow! That black matte looks like leather! Amazing! I will definitely consider splurging on this!
ReplyDeleteOoooh, I love the matte one. It looks like leather on your nails!
ReplyDeleteSomething Polished starification yes, it does! :D
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't know what to do. I have both a good glossy black (American Apparel Hassid) and a good matte black (Illamasqua Scorn), yet I'm still SO tempted by this set! Black + YSL - $30 = one very very tempted Julia who should know better. I wish you had panned this so that it would be easier for me to resist :).
ReplyDeleteoh Julia I wish I could help but I don't have Scorn so I really couldn't say which is better. hugs.
ReplyDeleteOh, man... The French tip look is beyond droolworthy!! It's amazing on your skin tone as well :)
ReplyDeleteMega-Fierce! Love it!
ReplyDeleteOMG I loooove these blacks! <3 And your french tip attempt turned out amazing <3
ReplyDeleteoh wow! the matte one is amazing!
ReplyDeleteWow, the matte black is STUNNING!! It seriously looks like leather. I wish it didn't come in a set so I don't have to spend $30 on it!! XP
ReplyDeleteIt's quite surprising that the matte one takes longer to dry, usually matte polishes are really quick-dry. I did buy Orly Matte Vinyl long ago but gave it to a friend who fell in love with it and now I use my matte top-coat over a black cream if I want that look.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the matte/shiny black French mani, did it a while ago, only to find out that my Matte Magic had dried out and was leaving little white spot on the nail. I'll have to do it again, it's so classy!!
Woah, that french is so sexy! :D Absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeletewow! these black nail polishes look very chic. I love the mani you recreated!
ReplyDeletethis looks sooo good. I never wear black nailpolish, because I always thought it was boring. You proofed me wrong, thank you very much :)
ReplyDeletecongrats on your 200th post! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm on the fence about this set. I mean, I could replicate the idea with a $2 black polish and a matte topcoat. Maybe it's just my high-end-brand-phobia, lol. The matte looks beautiful on you :)
I don't wear black on my nails but if someone else is doing it perfectly like you, I don't mind, I actually like it
ReplyDeleteCongratulation on another milestone :)
I saw this set and thought OMG I must have it. Then I thought I have shiny black polish and matte topcoat so. Don't need this but I think you changed my mind! These are stunning!
ReplyDeleteooow this look amazing indeed!!! hmmm, I could ask Santa a little extra present right?!
ReplyDeleteyeah, I have Illamasqua Scorn as well and will def skip this collection. I've done that mani some times and always gotten compliments
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I wasn't a fan of pure black nail polish until this year. I was thinking of picking up Chanel Black Satin but might get this set instead. I love the promo pic, too. It radiates just the right mix of style, class and bad-assery. ;)
ReplyDeleteWow is all that i can say. I am drooling over that matte glossy french manicure. Your pictures are just stunning. I will definitely be buying these.
ReplyDeleteI love the matte polish, it looks like leather! The black 'french tip' mani is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteOh my! Really! I'm BLOWN away. I rarely comment (sorry, and I will try to improve ;-) ) Even though I'm blown away buy your posts, I usually hold it together. But this one.. this polish.. look.. I could not help my self - I had to express my LOVE. W.A.N.T.E.D.!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
<3
OMG that is an amazing set!!! *dies a little* The matte polish looks like the most beautiful black leather! And the shine on the other is perfection! I love them by themselves, I love them together...I love everything about this! :D Really gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteSam! This duo is gorgeous and I have been drooling over it since I saw your first post on the collection, lol! Your application is, as always, sublime and your free hand mani (free hand and so perfect? are you kidding me? you're a genius!!) will be replicated by me for sure, if not everyone else who read you!! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteWow, that black matte polish is amazing!! Your pictures make it look like black leather on your nails-- very cool. Also, I love the french tip look you recreated. It's beautiful! Suddenly, I think I need this set.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely lovely! I think I need to look into getting this.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, the matte is stunning. Your mani looks perfect! I really want this set now :-)
ReplyDeleteOh my WORD that matte is incredible. Wow.
ReplyDeleteDoes the Matte Black really look that much like leather in every type of lighting (indoor, natural light, fluorescent, bright light, etc.)?
ReplyDeleteThis looks gorgeous! Reminds me of leather.
ReplyDeleteWow, the matte polish looks like leather! LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the matte one, it seriously looks like leather, I've never seen this before! And the combination, no words for that perfection. I love black polish and this set looks seriously awesome. Price tag is killing me though. Then again, maybe Santa will bring them to me ... ;)
ReplyDeleteWow, your nails are gorgeous! Now I must go buy this polish!
